This is a Test

Public Works has closed 29th Avenue S to through traffic at the Midtown Greenway as part of a traffic control test. According to the city’s website, the project is meant “to reduce the volume of automobile traffic adjacent to Seward Montessori School as part of a Safe Routes to School planning effort.” This residential street sees above-average traffic volume as motorists travel between Lake Street and Franklin Avenue or Interstate 94.

The test closure is one option the city is exploring to improve safety for students at neighborhood schools and the bicyclists and pedestrians who use the Greenway. The city estimates that the Midtown Greenway sees 1,800 daily cyclists during warm months, and reducing the number of at-grade intersections between streets and the Greenway helps decrease the likelihood of auto, bike, and pedestrian collisions.
